Workshops

What’s the Big Idea?

This workshop introduces 8-10 year olds to some of the fundamental questions and issues of philosophy, in a fun, collaborative, student-centered way. They will encounter basic questions of ethics (what makes something right or wrong?), political philosophy (how do societies make rules?), epistemology (what is opinion? what is knowledge? truth?), metaphysics (what exists?), and aesthetics (what is art? what is beauty?). Working from their own ideas and answers to these questions, children will learn how to critically evaluate their answers by inspecting the reasons they have for believing them. In this way, while they enjoy the pleasure of trying to figure out their own answers to questions humans have been asking for millennia, they will be honing their critical reasoning skills.

Class time: Fridays, 3:30-5:00pm

This workshop runs January 20 through March31 (there is no class on 2/24). First week is a free trial.

Instructor: Joseph S. Biehl

Location: 551 Fort Washington Avenue, NY, NY 10033

Weekly Homework: Think, wonder, question, and reflect (it might be useful to write thoughts and reflections down in a journal so that they can be discussed at the next meeting).

Keys to the City

This workshop is for 11-14 year olds, and introduces them to philosophical topics through the framework of creating their own society. They will be invited to consider questions about human nature and value; the meaning and significance of freedom and equality; the relationship between authority, order, and rights; the function of education; the distinctions between private and public property; the very idea of a home; our relationship to the environment; and the meaning of justice. While they discuss these matters, we will consider how they are manifested in issues facing New York City today.
